Aluminium or carbon SUP paddle?

Variations in SUP paddle construction can have a profound effect on the efficiency and performance of your paddling.

Aluminium SUP paddles

These are typically constructed with aluminium shafts and plastic polypropylene blades. While heavier than more expensive options, aluminium SUP paddles are great for beginners as they’re especially resilient to knocks, bumps and scrapes.

Fibreglass hybrid SUP paddles

A SUP paddle with a fibreglass shaft provides a decent intermediate upgrade from aluminium. The inclusion of a fibreglass shaft means the paddle is lighter and stiffer than an aluminium one. This translates to more efficient paddling and a bit less strain on your body.

Using the same blades found on aluminium models, a fibreglass hybrid retains the durability needed at the business end of the paddle, while offering added performance.

Carbon hybrid SUP paddles

SUP paddles partially built with carbon fibre are much lighter than aluminium and fibreglass, while still offering the strength associated with denser materials.

When used in a SUP paddle shaft, the stiff carbon fibre construction can help paddlers generate high levels of speed and force in the water, without being weighed down.

Full carbon fibre SUP paddles

An entirely carbon fibre construction (both shaft and blade) makes for the lightest, stiffest SUP paddle. Carbon fibre blades have little to no flex in the water, allowing for a more efficient stroke.

As well as the reduced weight, the entire paddle is more rigid. This makes it exceedingly efficient in the water. Effort put into the stroke is not lost through flexing of the blade or shaft.

Other considerations when choosing a SUP paddle

Paddle length

The ideal length for your paddle relies not only on your height and reach but also the SUP discipline in which you intend to use it.

SUP surfing benefits from shorter paddles for rapid, powerful strokes. However, leisurely paddling over extended distances will be suited to a longer paddle for more efficient, energy-conserving strokes.

Adjustable SUP paddles

Adjustable paddles provide the freedom to use the same paddle in different situations. They often come in either two- or three-piece setups, each with their own benefits.

Three-piece paddles

SUP paddles able to be broken down into three pieces are the most convenient to store. The extra joints and mechanisms required for a paddle – with separate handle, blade, and shaft – does add a little weight and makes flex a bit more likely.

Two-piece paddles

These can also be broken down and adjusted to suit the rider, but exhibit less flex once assembled. This makes for a more efficient stroke while sacrificing a little of the storage convenience of three-piece paddles.

Fixed SUP paddles

Fixed paddles are better suited to the most committed and experienced SUP riders, who know what height works for them and what their paddle will be used for. Without adjustable mechanisms built-in, fixed paddles are the lightest and most rigid paddles available.

As they can’t be broken apart for storage, additional care should be taken to avoid damage while transporting or stowing.

Keeping your paddle with you

When out on your board, it’s recommended that you secure your paddle to the board with a leash to avoid losing it if it’s dropped or you fall into the water.

Except for those made from aluminium, most SUP paddles are usually light enough to float. However, they can still be carried away by a current.

Buying a good quality SUP paddle

Ultimately, as with much of paddleboarding, the final choice depends on rider preference and requirements as well as budget.

At Two Bare Feet, we supply a comprehensive selection of high-quality SUP paddles to suit a range of abilities and needs.

We stock aluminium paddles, fibreglass hybrids, carbon hybrids and full carbon SUP paddles, in both two- and three-piece configurations. (Note: our aluminium paddles are three-piece only).

We even provide an adjustable carbon variant with bamboo laminate, for a touch of style.
